Technology News...
Bharat R. Acharya of Platypus Technologies reports nematic liquid crystals, the basic material of most flat-panel displays, enable detection of chemical and biological agents.
Israeli company Bioexplorers says its airport security scanners can outperform existing machines - describes its system as being based on 'multiple hypersensitive biosensors' - but they're mice to you and me.
Researchers at Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University have developed a new type of "diffraction-based" sensor made of thin stripes of a gelatinous material called a hydrogel, which expands and contracts depending on the acidity of its environment.
A research team, led by Drs. Joshua Caldwell and Orest Glembocki, at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, have developed surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors using optically stimulated plasmon oscillations in nanostructured substrates - these arrays are over an order-of-magnitude more sensitive than the best reported SERS sensors.
Electrochemical nitric oxide (NO) sensors have been reviewed by Benjamin J. Privett, Jae Ho Shin and Mark H. Schoenfisch
Italian researchers at CNR–IMM describe a flexible sensor system based on capacitive chemical sensors integrated with readout circuits fabricated on ultra thin substrate which could distinguish methanol from ethanol.
Joint venture between Optiqua and NTU's Centre for Biomimetic Sensor Science to develop next generation sensor technology.

In which we try to bring you the more unusual sensor related news items of the month.
Petrel Biosensors, a spin-off of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, despite the fact that their business plan is still being finalised, have divulged more information regarding their swimming behavior spectrometers which test for toxins in water. The concept is that protozoa have swimming patterns which are changed in the presence of toxins, and this change can be detected quickly in real time vs. the 24 to 72 hours needed for conventional testing. Great idea - let's hope their plan releases the $ they need.
In many ways February has been a problematic month for Sensor100. Not only did its editor succumb to two prevalent UK bugs (one repiratory, one intestinal) in quick succession, but then our computer system crashed. Fortunately no lasting harm has been done, but one does wonder if the QA and regulatory requirements of the medical device industry should not be applied to IT.
Warm reagrds,
