Keynote 1 i-sense: Harnessing smartphones and nanosensors for early disease detection Prof. Rachel McKendry Director of i-sense London Centre for Nanotechnology and Department of Medicine, UCL Rachel McKendry is Director of i-sense and holds a joint position between the London Centre for Nanotechnology and Division of Medicine at UCL. Her research lies at the cutting edge of nanotechnology, telecommunication, big data, infectious diseases and public health. Recent breakthroughs span from unravelling the nanomechanical molecular workings of antibiotics against MRSA, to new research towards developing a mobile phone-connected diagnostic test for HIV (NIHR i4i Award withOJBio, UCL BRC and UCL Partners), and early warning sensing systems for infectious disease outbreaks that link mobile test results to symptoms reported on social media (i-sense). Professor McKendry's achievements include six Nature group papers, £20M in research grants, translational work with industry, advising government and public engagement work with patient groups and schools. She has won several prestigious awards for her research including the Royal Society Rosalind Franklin Award, Royal SocietyWolfson Merit Award, Institute of Physics Paterson Medal, Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship and a Cambridge University Girton College Research Fellowship. 14
