The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) uses an Antarc-
tic mission to field test a “smart shirt for space”
Developed for the CSA by
CarréTechnologies
of Montréal,
Québec, Astroskin is a prototype medical monitoring system de-
signed for astronauts that could, one day, become an important tool
for patients here on Earth. The shirt is equipped with a series of non-
invasive sensors that automatically record and process the wearer’s
vital signs, sleep quality and activity level. Carré Technologies has also
developed Hexoskin, a version commercially available for athletes and
used by research institutions to monitor health outside of the usual
clinical settings, during real life activities.
Israeli Scientists Develop
Nano-tech Explosive De-
tector
Developed by a Tel Aviv company
Tracense
, the groundbreaking,
nano-technology-based sensor
was revealed in Nature Communi-
cations. The trace detector, which
is still in the prototype phase, can
identify several different types of
explosives in real time, even at a
distance of several meters from the
source at concentrations as low as a few molecules per 1,000 trillion.
