Bionic Eye Implant Approved for U.S. Patients
. The retineal
implant device from
Second Sight,
Sylmar CA has received FDA
approval, allowing the company to market the device to patients with
advanced retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative disease leading to blind-
ness. It is the first device to gain approval in the US,“This enables
people who are completely blind to see enough to improve their mo-
bility,” says Mark Humayun, a professor of biomedical engineering at the
University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Read the full report

biosensors attach to collars and monitor
movement. Owners can access detailed
reports of how much time their pet has
spent napping or chasing its tail by logging
onto a website. When the dog behaves
out of character, an email or text is sent
to the owner. At a cost of $149.95 and
a monthly fee of $9.95 to access data, pet
owners would need a serious interest in
their pet’s well being.
has developed a series
of new mid-infrared spectrometers, which have been integrated into
compact gas sensors, branded as “GasSensors”. Gas sensors developed
in a European project now enable the implementation of cheaper and
smaller instruments with equal or higher speed and sensitivity than
current laboratory-grade instruments. Production of super-sensitive
and portable measuring devices is made possible by a photo-acoustic
gas sensor with innovative parts such as an interferometer and a MEMS
cantilever. While a laser is needed as infrared light source for the high-
est sensitivity, novel IR LEDs are sufficient for measuring fairly small gas
concentrations in lower cost portable devices.
